2019-2020 Extended Essay Camp

The Douglas County High School (DCHS) International Baccalaureate Parent Organization (IBPO) is delighted to sponsor the 2019-2020 Extended Essay Camp.

The Extended Essay (EE) is a requirement for IB students to obtain their diploma and the EE Camp is a great resource that guides the IB students achieve their highest score.

This Academic Year, the EE Camp will be split into three sessions. It is very important that students attend each of these sessions as each one of the sessions addresses a different focus for the development of the Extended Essay. Missing a session puts the student in a situation where they do not understand the requirements and leads them to a subpar essay. There are no makeup sessions, so please plan accordingly. Students who work will be asked to take time off from their jobs to attend all of the sessions.Under the IB Extended Essay curriculum , the students’ grade will be based on the final Extended Essay draft and on the process they followed to produce it.EXTENDED ESSAY TOPICS

– Developing an overall essay question and sub-components
– Components and structure of the essay
– IBO guidelines for various essay subject areas and grading rubrics
– Research strategies, selection and analyses of valid sources
– Development of the essay outline
– Advice on avoiding common essay mistakes
– One-on-one consultations with students

EXTENDED ESSAY SESSIONS AND DATES

1st SESSION: Camp #1 – Field Trip
Friday, February 28th, 2020 at CU Denver Auraria Library in Denver
Instruction on Criterion B: Knowledge and Understanding.
The IB office will contract one school bus from the district to take and return the students from the Auraria campus. The students and the teachers will leave DCHS at 7:45am and return by 2:45pm.

2nd SESSION: Camp #2
Saturday, March 28th, 2020 at DCHS Library
Instruction on outlines and five pages and Criterion D: Presentation.
9:00 am to 12:00 pm

3rd SESSION: Summer Camp
Wednesday, May 27th and Thursday, May 28th, 2020 at CU Denver Auraria Library in Denver
First 5 pages Essay Check and Feedback
This session will happen after the semester has concluded and students will meet their teachers at the Auraria Library. It is recommended that the students take the light rail train to Auraria.

The Summer Camp hours: 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
Students are encourage to do research at the library on their own after the session.

IB STUDENTS’ EXTENDED ESSAYS ARE DUE IN THE FALL OF THEIR SENIOR YEAR (November 2020)
Completing the Extended Essay (EE) takes a significant time commitment from students for planning, research, and writing to be successful. This Workshop enables students to begin focusing their efforts early in the summer, and to turn in a quality first draft to their EE advisor soon after school starts in the fall.

Instructors for the workshop are Ms. Kim Clever, Ms. Theresa Hemming, and Mr. Kelse Risner, IB Extended Essay Coordinators at DCHS. During the workshop they will describe the Extended Essay process, answer questions, provide support for narrowing research questions and guide student research.

(Note: The IBPO has a limited number of need-based scholarships available this year based on generous donations from IBPO supporters. Follow the instructions in the “Payment Options” below. All approved scholarships will be handled separately)

The EE Workshop is open to IB Juniors attending DCHS.

Registration deadline is Friday, January 10th, 2020
No refunds after Friday, February 7th, 2020.
